An EGR valve rarely fails quietly - the car usually reacts with several symptoms at once. The real question is telling apart a faulty valve from a bad EGR sensor or a wiring issue in the system as a whole.

How shop diagnostics tells the valve, sensor and wiring apart

A scanner shows a fault code but doesn't always pinpoint the source - for that, a technician checks the valve stem's mechanical travel by hand, watches the sensor readings in real time, and inspects the hoses and wiring for leaks.

Important limitation

A single fault code can't tell you exactly what's failed - the valve, the sensor or the wiring. The repair cost differs a lot between them, which is exactly why diagnostics is worth doing.

How do I tell a valve fault from a sensor fault?
