DPF pressure sensor: what dashboard errors actually mean

The differential pressure sensor is two thin hoses that carry pressure to the sensor from both sides of the DPF filter, letting the ECU estimate how clogged the filter is from the pressure difference. The problem is that an error from this sensor looks identical on the dashboard to an error from a genuinely clogged filter – even though the cause and repair cost are worlds apart.

Short version

A cracked or pinched sensor hose and corroded connector contacts trigger the exact same dashboard error as real filter clogging. Replacing a perfectly good filter because of a faulty sensor is a common and expensive mistake – one a single check before replacement can avoid.

What the pressure readings actually say about the filter

Pressure at idle Pressure at 2500 rpm What it means
0-5 hPa 0-30 hPa Broken circuit or cracked sensor hose
7-15 hPa from 40 hPa Normal, filter is fine
15-150 hPa rises with rpm Clogging is building up, not yet critical
>150 hPa >150 hPa Critical clogging at any rpm
The key diagnostic rule

If the pressure stays near zero both at idle and under load at 2500 rpm, that points to a hose or sensor defect, not a clean filter. Genuine clogging always rises with rpm – it doesn’t sit at zero.

What makes the sensor lie

  • a cracked or pinched measuring hose – the most common cause of a false error
  • corroded connector contacts from winter moisture and road salt
  • the sensor itself has failed and reports incorrect values

When the error means a real filter problem

Genuine filter clogging is almost always paired with noticeable power loss, frequent forced regenerations, and rising fuel consumption – if none of that is happening and only the sensor error is on, the hoses and connector are worth checking before the filter itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check the sensor myself without a shop diagnostic?

A visual check of the hoses for cracks and the connector for corrosion is something you can do yourself, but the exact hPa numbers at idle and under load only come from a proper diagnostic.

How much does a sensor cost compared to a filter?

The sensor and hoses cost a fraction of a new filter – which is exactly why they’re worth checking first, before agreeing to a filter replacement.

Is a sensor error dangerous for the engine?

Not on its own, but if the ECU triggers regeneration too often or too rarely because of bad readings, that affects oil consumption and the filter’s remaining life.
