DPF: restore or remove - how to choose and what it costs

DPF restore or remove is the choice I lay out in almost every consultation about a clogged filter. There isn't one universally right answer - a road car and an off-road vehicle call for two different decisions.

Short version

For a car driven on public roads and put through vehicle inspection, restoration is the right path - cleaning, repairing a component, or replacing the filter. Software removal is only legal for vehicles not used on public roads (off-road, special equipment, cars exported outside the EU) and at the owner's request.

Why restoration is the main option for road cars

DPF removal without physical dismantling is an ECU remap that switches off software monitoring of the filter. The 2026 inspection standards for particulate matter are getting stricter, and a car without a working DPF, or with an emulator, will predictably fail. Restoration brings the car back to factory logic instead.

What restoration costs

What's doneWhen it fitsPrice
Hydrodynamic DPF wash with removalSoot or ash clog, housing intact€100-300
EGR valve replacement (if linked to the clog)Worn or stuck component€400
New original DPF/EGRMelted honeycomb, broken structure€1,000-1,800

When software removal is even discussed

DPF removal is an ECU remap, either on its own or together with physically dismantling the filter. It's only discussed for vehicles not driven on public roads: off-road use, special equipment, cars being exported outside the EU. For cars older than 2013, there's a separate offer: DPF/EGR OFF comes free when ordering an AdBlue disable.

How well each option settles the issue long-term (from shop experience)
Restoration (clean/repair/replace)Settles it for good
Software removal, road carInspection risk keeps rising
Software removal, off-road vehicleLegal and appropriate
Honestly, about the limit

Software removal without physical dismantling doesn't get rid of the accumulated soot - it just stops monitoring the filter. If the goal is to pass inspection, that's not a solution, it's a direct path to a fail.

FAQ

Can I just remove the DPF and keep driving in the city?

Technically yes, but it's not legal for public roads, and from 2026 the risk of failing inspection only grows.

Which is cheaper - restoration or removal?

Removal is often cheaper as a one-off, but that's a one-time saving at the cost of legality - restoration settles the question for good.

Are there discounts on restoration?

Yes - for cars up to 2013, DPF/EGR OFF is free when ordering an AdBlue disable, and Stage 1 is a free gift with any emissions-system work.

Send the make, year and what the dashboard shows - diagnostics will tell you honestly what your car actually needs.
