EGR vs DPF is one of the most common mix-ups I hear, because both belong to a diesel's exhaust system and both suffer from the same short city trips. But they're two different parts doing two different jobs.

Why they're so often confused
Both an EGR fault and a DPF clog tend to announce themselves the same way - loss of power, a dashboard warning, black smoke. A driver hears the same complaints from different people and assumes it's the same part. In reality only the symptoms overlap, not the cause: a gummed-up valve chokes the intake with carbon, while a clogged filter builds back pressure in the exhaust - mechanically two different processes.
Can EGR issues be addressed separately from the DPF
Yes - working on the EGR without touching the DPF is technically a separate job, because they're different components with separate logic in the ECU. Servicing one doesn't automatically require touching the other.
